Akbar delivers an authentic taste of India. Founded in 1998 by Avinash Kapoor, Akbar has been an Old Pasadena favorite for over a decade. If you love chutneys and mouthwatering tandoori that taste as if they came on a red-eye straight from India, Akbar is the place for you. As one Yelper puts it: “Outside of a few places in Artesia’s Little India, this is the best Indian food I’ve had in LA, period. It’s a cozy spot, great for a date, and has an open kitchen that often lights up the dimly lit room with bursts of cooking flame.”

In addition to the standard tandoori fare Akbar gets inventive with dishes of ginger marinated lamb, stuffed jalapeño with spiced cheese and chutney, chicken mint cilantro kebabs, and blue crab claw meat in a coconut-tamarind sauce. Folks also rave about their excellent naan, plain and garlic, which is baked fresh in-house. Their chutneys, including cilantro, coconut and pickled vegetable, are made fresh daily and are sure to kick any dish up a notch. And to cool things down, Akbar has a wine and Indian beers menu that pairs nicely with its full flavored dishes.
