Need some cool new furnishings or accoutrement to make your old place a home? Want to take your entertainment style up a notch? Time for a new bed? How about some kitchen gadgets that will impress your most discerning foodie friends? Crate and Barrel has you covered. Back in the 60’s, Gordon and Carole Segal, a young Chicago couple inspired from their recent European honeymoon decided that they needed to remedy a regional shortage of outlets for contemporary, affordable housewares they’d so admired during their travels. Energized by the American entrepreneurial spirit, the Segals began importing housewares directly from European artisans, and in 1962 made their hand-selected items available to the public through a former elevator warehouse storefront. What start-up money they had was spent on importing quality products, shortchanging the cash flow for display. The Segals turned this deficit into a windfall, cleverly used stacked shipping crates and barrels to exhibit their wares, and ultimately launched the Crate & Barrel legacy. A company that “began with a dream, one employee and no cash register,” Crate & Barrel is now one of America’s leading suppliers of quality, European-inspired housewares with 100 stores nationwide and over 7,000 employees.
